Shannon Airport to Dromoland Castle: The 15-Minute Transfer

Dromoland Castle is so close to Shannon Airport that some guests wonder whether a transfer is worth booking at all. It is about fifteen minutes by road. Surely you can just grab a taxi?

Sometimes you can. This guide covers the short run from Shannon to Dromoland, when pre-booking makes sense, and what to know if Dromoland is your base for a wedding or a golf trip.

Shannon to Dromoland: the basics

  • Distance: about 13 to 16km, depending on the route
  • Journey time: around 15 minutes in normal traffic
  • Route: north from the airport on the motorway towards Newmarket-on-Fergus, with the castle gates just off it

It is one of the shortest airport-to-hotel transfers in the country, which is a big part of why Dromoland is so popular with visitors flying into Shannon.

When a taxi is fine

If there are one or two of you, you have normal luggage and you are landing at a sensible hour, the taxi rank outside arrivals will usually do the job. A fifteen-minute journey does not need much planning.

When it is worth booking ahead

A pre-booked transfer earns its keep in a few situations:

  • Early transatlantic arrivals. When several flights land close together in the early morning, the rank can empty quickly. A booked driver is already inside arrivals with your name on a board
  • Golf bags and heavy luggage. A standard taxi is a saloon. Four people with travel bags and clubs will not fit in one, and two taxis cost more than one larger vehicle
  • Wedding guests. If you are bringing guests in for a wedding at Dromoland, one collection for the whole party beats a dozen guests making their own way
  • Arriving with children. Child seats need to be requested in advance, which you cannot do at a rank

Moving guests in for a wedding

Dromoland is one of the best-known wedding venues in Ireland, and a lot of guests fly in through Shannon. The usual approach is to group arrivals by flight and send a vehicle for each group, rather than leave guests to sort themselves out.

A Mercedes V-Class takes up to six passengers. A 16-seat Mercedes Sprinter can bring in a full flight's worth of guests in one trip. Our guide to organising wedding guest transport covers how to plan it.

Dromoland as a base

Because it is so central, Dromoland works well as a base for exploring the Midwest. Adare Manor is about 47km away, a little under 40 minutes in normal traffic, and guests often split a trip between the two estates. Lahinch, Doonbeg and the Cliffs of Moher are all within reach for a day out with a driver.

If you are travelling on to Adare Manor, our Shannon to Adare Manor guide has the details for that leg.

What to tell us when you book

  • Your flight number, so the pickup moves with your flight if it lands early or late
  • How many people, suitcases and golf bags
  • Whether you need child seats
  • Any onward journeys during your stay

Dowling Executive Travel runs private transfers between Shannon Airport, Dromoland Castle and the rest of the Midwest, from a Mercedes V-Class for couples and families to a 16-seat Sprinter for wedding parties and golf groups.
