Your flight lands at Shannon at 7.20am. Your first tee time at Doonbeg is the following morning, but you want to be at the hotel, unpacked and looking at the Atlantic by lunchtime, not studying road signs for Kilrush after a night in the air.
This guide covers getting from Shannon Airport to Trump International Doonbeg: how long it takes, what your options are, and how to plan it if Doonbeg is one stop on a longer golf trip.
By Irish standards that is an easy airport run. It is still long enough that the vehicle matters, especially after a transatlantic flight and with golf bags on board.
A driver meets you in arrivals with a name board, loads the bags and takes you straight to the hotel. You do not wait at a rank, find a hire desk or drive on the left for the first time on unfamiliar roads.
For a couple or a small group, a Mercedes V-Class takes up to six passengers. For a larger golf society, a 16-seat Mercedes Sprinter keeps everyone and every bag in one vehicle.
Taxis wait outside arrivals at Shannon. For one or two people with light luggage they work. The catch is the vehicle: you get whatever car is next in line, and a saloon with four golf bags in the boot is a squeeze nobody enjoys after an overnight flight.
If you plan to drive yourself around Clare and Kerry for the week, hiring makes sense. If the car will sit in the hotel car park between golf rounds, it usually does not. Add insurance excess, fuel and a first drive on the left after no sleep, and it is often the most expensive way to make a one-hour journey.
There is no direct bus from the airport to Doonbeg. You would be changing buses with luggage and clubs, and for a trip that ends at a links resort with a set of clubs, almost nobody does it.
Most golfers who come to Doonbeg also want to play Lahinch, and the two are close. Doonbeg to Lahinch Golf Club is about 27km, roughly half an hour up the coast road.
That makes Doonbeg a natural base for a few days in west Clare. Play one course in the morning, be back for dinner, and play the other the next day without changing hotels. A driver who does this run regularly will know how long to leave for a tee time and where the parking is at each club.
If you are planning a longer trip that takes in Ballybunion or Kerry as well, our guide to planning a golf tour of Southwest Ireland covers the whole route.

Flying home to the US from Shannon means clearing US preclearance before you board, so build in more time than you would for a European flight. Check your airline's advice for how early to arrive, then add the drive. We work back from your departure time and tell you when we will collect you.
